Have you ever heard about the “Mozart of Math”? I guess you have!
AI vs. Human Intelligence: What Does Terence Tao Say?
Terence Tao is a mathematician known for his deep and original insights across a broad range of topics. He is often called the “Mozart of Math.”
Recently, Terence Tao, a UCLA professor considered to be the greatest living mathematician, compared ChatGPT’s GPT-4 reasoning model to being “mediocre, but not completely incompetent.”
Why AI Will Always Need Human Guidance
Many graduate students can find the solution to complex or hard problems by getting some hints and prodding.
AI can never surpass human intelligence on its own. After all, AI is a summary of all the data obtained from human brains and their personal experiences in specific fields. AI can serve as a guide or suggestion feed to point in the right direction. When you tell an AI its approach doesn’t work, it apologizes, may temporarily correct its course, but sometimes just snaps back to what it tried before.
Collaboration, Not Competition
Here’s some good news for math prodigies, according to Tao: AI and mathematicians are more likely to become collaborators. Instead of replacing math enthusiasts, AI will enable them to explore larger scales and solve more complex problems.
In the end, I’d suggest that if you have any projects or tasks to do, ask AI: “What if I try this approach?” Instead of spending tons of hours working, simply ask GPT to do it for you or give you a guideline.
